Not
so long ago, we discovered the video of "Uncalled for" by this
unknown ( to us ) swedish band called dreamboy. Dreamboy...the name itself
was appealing, like the promise of something poppy but also dreamy and
fresh...two weeks later, their complete discography was ordered ( one
album and one EP ) and it was time to discover if dreamboy was a one-hit-single
band or could take the distance...I have to admit that "Uncalled
for" will probably ever remain my favourite song of dreamboy because
it's just the perfect pop song and it has heart and guts and feelings
unlike anything we hear these days on the radios...Nevertheless, the EP
and the album "It means the world to me" are full of other interesting
songs that grow in you with the time...It was then time to try and know
a little more about them...so, here it is !
So,
how did dreamboy begin ? did you meet each other at school ?
Yes indeed, or rather, the seed that eventually became Dreamboy met
at school. Me (Ludwig) and Fredrik S went to junior high school together
and after a year or so of playing in separate bands decided to play
together since we loved the same records. I was a real book worm and
Fredrik was actually a quite gifted hockey player, but we found that
we loved the same kind of music. After a few years we wanted to really
dedicate ourselves and find more members that shared our ambition.
We found Niklas and Richard through friends and then stole Fredrik
H from another band!
Was it hard to get signed on a label and get the first EP released
? Getting
signed was not hard at all, we were lucky that our first demo was
found by a well-known producer. But getting the EP released took a
long, long time. That was mainly due to the way the old fashioned
music industry works.
When
did you meet Andreas of Sounds like violence ? How did he influenced
the life of dreamboy ? The producer that heard our first demo is a kind of talent-scout
here in Sweden. He finds new bands and helps them record properly
and find a good label. Or, that's how it's supposed to work anyway.
One of the bands he worked with when he found us was Niccokick (where
Andreas sings and writes the music). And since Andreas is a very
talented producer himself, he was given the task to record our first
EP. That's when we became good friends (I noticed on my computer
that he just signed in to msn). He influenced us a lot, especially
when it came to recording and how we sound.
Who writes the song in the band ? is it a collective effort ? Do
you start jamming and keep the good stuff and work on it later on
? Usually
I write a song at home, with chords, melodies and lyrics. Then I
prepare for the scariest part of playing music, which is playing
the song on my own in front of the band. That's a lot more frightening
than playing in front of thousands of people. Together we then start
working out details, changing arrangements, and in my opinion adding
the magic of the songs - since everyone wants to add their own flavor.
The video of "Uncalled For"...".make up your
miiiiiiiiiiind !"
Has
anything been different after the release of "Uncalled for"
? Is it your "smells like teen spirit" song ? you know
the one that people always want you to play at shows, etc.. ? Now
that we're touring with our album "It Means The World To Me",
it seems that a lot of people shout "Uncalled For". So
yes, I think people tend to remember that song and really want us
to play it live so that they can sing along.
The
video of "uncalled for" is quite funny, is it a side of
the life inside dreamboy that you want to show to the audience too
? The
video director had the whole idea for the video, and we really liked
it. The only part we really influenced were the records lying next
to me on the floor - Teenage Fanclub and The Beach Boys!
Who
directed the video for uncalled for ? Did he direct other videos
for swedish bands ? His
name is Daniel Kong and his first video ever was "Uncalled
For". He has done a few videos for other artists in Sweden
as well, like Anna Ternheim for example.
Do you have connections with other swedish (or non-swedish) bands
? Yes,
Fredrik S plays with Anna Järvinen and Fredrik H plays a lot
with Hello Saferide. We also have connections to bands such as [ingenting].
We have had some mail contacts with bands from Japan (and Belgium
I believe) that share the same label as we have in Japan.
I heard that music was kind of important in swedish schools ? true
or false ? Not like in belgium, you have like 1 hour per week during
one year ( around 12 and that's it ) We
have quite a lot of music in school. That's where I learned to play
the guitar!
Lyrically,
it seems that you've been marked by adolescence and scholarship
( like in "oh,michael", "pay attention",etc...
). is it something conscious ? how old are you, in fact ? I'm
27. But yeah, I think that growing up, or aging, or passing a stage
in life, is what really leaves marks in my soul. It's pretty irreversible.
And memories from school... everyone has them. Hopefully not as
bad as the ones I sing about in "Michael".
I
ordered recently, the uncalled for EP in its japanese version and
one of you told me that he had to order it himself in order to get
it, how come ? don't you have any rights on the foreign releases
? We
don't have any rights to our own music :) Haha, seriously though,
our former producer signed a contract with the Japanese label, a
contract we have never seen. So we have no rights whatsoever, which
can be a lesson learned to other bands...
Is your album distributed in other countries ? Apart
from Japan, no other countries yet. It's cooking though, so we're
pretty sure it will be.
11.
Do you have plans of touring in Europe ? No
plans yet, but we're anxious to go!
Do
you guys still work or is dreamboy your full-time "job"
? We
all work, but not always full-time. Right now, we probably could
survive without working at all, but in six months time we would
probably have to go back to work again...
You
recently played in the apartment of a fan, how did that happen ?
Was it a one-shot or something you'd like to try again ? We
did it because one of our early gigs was as a birthday gift to Annika
Norlin whom I mentioned above. Our A liked the idea and a big internet
community for young people had a competition where the prize was
a Dreamboy-show at home! We'd love to do it again, it was so much
fun.
Who's
the girl singing on your album ? The
girl singing on our album, Annika Norlin, is Sweden's biggest female
indie pop star right now, she has released an album both in Swedish
and in English and won grammy's and other awards as well.
who's
your biggest influence ? Our
biggest influence is probably other bands that we know. We get a
lot of inspiration from simply going to shows, listening to friends
demo's and that kind of stuff.
People sometimes compare you to weezer. true? false? great? annoying
? Ah,
the Weezer comparison. It is true. It is great. And it has turned
out to be a little annoying as well! Ok, sure we've listened to
them but nowadays we don't sound a lot like them. Most of all, we
use a lot more acoustic instruments.
Do
you sometimes cover songs by others ? We've
only done one cover, "Surfer Girl" by the Beach Boys,
that we played at a private party. We always talk about doing a
cover, but we can never agree on a song...
what's
the craziest thing a fan has done for you or at your shows ?
Actually, last Saturday in Lund, a girl came all the way from Japan
to see us. She gave us all a pair of super-expensive chop sticks
with our names engraved on them. We could hardly believe it, it's
probably the biggest thing that has happened to us.
